Yearbook Photos of Neal

Neal gave us a call in need of a yearbook picture in very short time. So we photographed him in our outdoor home backyard to give him a few selections to choose from. He was in and out within and hour with his final fully retouched image. We do love digital photography.

So if you are just in need of a yearbook photo that is better than your school provides just give us a call.

We had only about fifteen with Jordyn before we lost the sun behind some big black clouds and the rain moved in. She had spent quite a bit of time in the salon to get her hair just perfect, and we did not want her to have to reinvest her time and money a second time. So we got innovative and found some great areas that were protected from the rain to finish her senior photo session. Jordyn graduated this year from Columbia River High School here in Vancouver.

Blake’s dad had some connections to a local car club and had they bring a few of their cars to his senior photo shoot. They surely added some unique elements to these images. As a courtesy I also took some photos of the owners with their vehicles. Blake is a graduate from Hockinson High School.

A Skyview High School graduate this year Tarek is also the son of our next door neighbor. We have watched him grow up over the past decade and it is amazing to think he is now a high school senior. Senior photos - two gals in two hours with two outfits. Everyone knows it’s always more fun doing something with a friend. So Nichole and Chelsea decided to have their senior pictures taken at the same time. As a photographer this is always a bit of a challenge due to the fact we are at similar locations, yet we want to make them each look unique in their own way. We succeeded, as they were both very happy with their images. These gals both attend Union High School here in Vancouver, WA.

He brought along a good selection of outfits for us to work with, and we really appreciate when clients do that – especially guys. Laney made the trip over from Portland’s Gresham High School to have us take her senior photos. This was another photo session where the lighting was just perfect on the day of Laney’s photo session. We hit some of our favorite locations in local Vancouver including the riverfront. Its senior photo sessions like this where the subject fully trusts our vision and they feel comfortable with themselves to let us see them as they are. I love how Laney’s personality shows up in these – from her fun and playful side to a more solemn side.

David is a great young Christian man and he wanted that to come across in his senior photo session with us. We chose our Urban/Industrial Vancouver area to photograph him and his car which he is in the process of restoring. I wanted to give some of those images a retro look like they were taken on an older film from that era. David has such a great smile and it was hard not to get him doing that for some of the more serious images. David is in the 2010 graduating senior class at Portland Christian School.

We heard that Siena spent most of a day on the internet looking for a photographer to do her senior photos. She found us and admired our work so much that she made a two and half hour trip down from Aberdeen, WA. To say the least - we were quite flattered.

Siena brought an entire closet of clothes – literally her entire closet. More than that though, she brought a wonderful sense of enthusiasm. That’s really all we can ever ask of our subjects.

The photos with the shopping cart were from a dream her friend had. We also tried some new found areas we have been checking out for awhile. Thanks again Siena for making the trip down.

Not only was she a beautiful subject with a great personality but she’s also into music, drama, and soccer. She was so much fun to work with and I’m sure it shows in these images.

A Skyview High School graduate this year, Kyle decided to have his senior photos taken in and around Urban/Industrial Vancouver and some selected Riverfront areas. We happened upon a local neighborhood cleanup where we found an old couch sitting in the road. We also had a fun time getting shots of him being a rock star with his guitar. It was another one of those photo sessions were everything falls together, great lighting, and location and of course a great subject.

Josie admired our work so much that she made the long trip from Hillsboro Oregon to have us take her senior pictures. To give her a different look we took her to some of our favorite Urban/Industrial Vancouver areas. It was one of those photo sessions where everything just fell into place, regardless of where we went everything just turned out great. Always keeping our eyes open for found objects; we had the good fortune to come across an old truck setting on the side of the road. I took a few minutes to capture some images of just the old truck too for my personal series of old vehicles.

I was quite surprised as to how well Tyler took direction with our posing suggestions. Most guys tend to over think it. He seemed quite comfortable and we found him to be great to work with. The final image with the denim jacket was actually from his dad's high school days. Tyler will be graduating this year from Prairie High School in the Battleground area.

It was almost like we could do no wrong – there was just such a variety of great locations to shoot in. Arvo is in the 2010 graduating senior class at Mountain View High School.

This is part two in a series of locations we did for Kristen’s senior photos. You can see her first session with us here.

The Oregon coast held special memories for her so she decided to have her senior photos taken there. We actually scheduled it earlier in the month but the weather was not conducive (rainy and windy – go figure). Besides coordinating both of our schedules we had to coordinate good weather, a very low (minus) tide and the position of the sun. That’s asking a lot, but fortunately we pulled it off.

The lighting was very harsh that day and we did what we could to work around it. The old coastal fort that remained there was an amazing location to work in. When my wife and I were there about a month ago on vacation I mentioned how great it would be to photograph a high school senior here – my wish came true.

Kristen is one of those people that always seem to have a smile on her face, and you can certainly see in these images. She attended David Douglas High School in Portland, OR.

Hailey attends Vancouver's Columbia River High School. Even though it was not quite as warm as we would have liked for her senior photo session at the Riverfront she did a great job and stuck it out. Mackenzie is the cousin of Jack who we photographed some months earlier. She chose to our Urban/Industrial Vancouver location for her photo session.

Her dog Bogie made a great addition to the photo shoot. Her boyfriend had no plans to be in any of the photos but we thought otherwise and included him anyway.

I hope she had as great of time having her senior photos taken as we had making them for her. Mackenzie is a graduate of Camas High School.

Engagement Photo Session - Nick & Gabriele

If you are a parent, then you know that photos of your children hold a special place in your heart. Nick is my son, and later this month he will be marrying Gabriele, who we have come to love equally well. Many times I’m asked if I will be taking the photos of the wedding. I always answer - “No, because I want to enjoy the day as a parent, not as a photographer”.

Nick proposed to Gabriele at “The Old Church” in Portland so we started their photo session there and did some more around the Portland / Vancouver area. You can see a photo session we did for them last year here, before they were engaged.

Patrick and Janene - Movin' Out

These are photos from an open house party we did for our good friends Patrick and Janene who will soon be moving to Washington DC. Their Airstream trailer is one of their favorite possessions, and as a photographer I was immediately drawn to it. I love retro stuff. For me, it conjured up their travels and moving away, so it seemed appropriate to take some photos by it. Janene later told me that some of the images looked like an album cover and that they were country rock stars….Cool.

Below are some of the friends and family who came to wish them well. Patrick and Janene are such a wonderful and fun couple and we will miss them dearly. We wish you all the best in your new journey!

You’re invited to a showing of nineteen images at Sweet Masterpiece Chocolates in Portland which will be up the entire month of May.

They represent some of my personal favorites taken during our high school senior photo sessions when the lighting, location, subject and gesture all came together to create a very special image.

After hours of working on an image in front of a computer screen I’m always amazed at the new life they take on as they're transform into a fine print. No computer screen can do them this justice.

So I hope you can make it there and I also highly recommend you try out some of the chocolates, coffee and deserts.

New 2010 Web Site Announcement

Well after many (too many) hours in front of the computer our NEW website is now officially up and running.

About ninety-five percent of the images are all new and reflect more of our current style. We have also added a new Senior Promo Video on our High School Senior page. Always growing, always learning and ever changing.

You’ll notice too that we no longer offer our services for wedding photography. There were many reasons for this but mainly we wanted to focus our time and energy on high school seniors and other portraiture. I’m hopeful that this will also allow more time to invest into some of my personal photography.

So give it a look and feel free to let us know your thoughts back here on our Blog.

The MacNab Family – 2009

Although we have known Bob & Vernageen for over twenty years this is the first time we have had the privilege to photograph them as a family. Bob was a local radio announcer for many years on KWJJ radio and I always enjoy hearing his rich mellow voice, what a gift.

Here is what they wrote us after seeing their images -
“What GREAT photos! Gary's imagination and ideas added so much. Only one problem. There are so many wonderful photos it is really difficult to choose the ones we want. Thanks to you and Karin for making the time together so memorable.” - Bob & Vernageen.

Elliott attends Skyview High School and chose to have his senior photos done in some of our favorite Urban/Industrial Vancouver areas. He was an easy subject to photograph and the image of him laughing became everyones favorite.

It was one of those perfect fall days with crisp cool air and beautiful soft late afternoon light.

Some years ago we also had the privilege to photograph his older sister. We always appreciate it when clients continue to come bask to us year after year. Thanks so much for giving us this privilege again.

Keone was photographed at three of our favorite locations in and around Vancouver. We happened upon this great locomotive, which was newly painted a few days earlier, so we had some fun using it in some of the shots. It was certainly one of the most massive props we’ve used to date.

The final image was a favorite for many. Catching the light at the Columbia River with Mt. Hood looking so majestic is not as easy as one would expect. We’ve been there many times before and it’s amazing how many elements have to fall into place to make a shot like this happen. He will be graduating from Mountain View High School here in Vancouver this year.

I never would have guessed that Olivia was coming in to have her senior pictures taken mainly at the request of her mother. Of course I didn’t find this out until well after we were all done. I had no clues because Olivia got right into it after the first few click of the shutter and I immediately felt a great rapport with her. The entire time and I kept thinking how easy she was to work with. In the end she had a blast and we created some great images together. Olivia will be attending Sunset High School in Oregon next month.

When you’re the daughter of a photographer you’ll most likely never have a shortage of pictures of yourself. The downside is that you may be asked throughout your life to pose and sit patiently for pictures because your dad has to test out a new lighting setup.

Fortunately our daughter Amy, now 25, wasn’t jaded by the experience. This photo session was at her request. It was a lot of fun and we were all very happy with what we came away with. Amy is expecting in March so we’ll have a brand new subject to work with, but no more testing – I promise.

Corey & Lauren – Engagement Photo Session

We did this photo session as part of our wedding gift for two great people Corey and Lauren. They are best friends with my son Nicholas and his girlfriend Gabriel. Corey is an extremely talented musician and the son of Bill & Jaynie Roberts the founders of Magenta Theater here in Vancouver, WA.

Corey proposed to Lauren at New Heights West and this is where the will be married today July 11th. 2009, so it seemed fitting to do their E-session there too. Here’s wishing you guys all the best in your new life together.

These are a few of the images we did from a photo session last year of my son and his girlfriend of two years. Nick has never been quite as cooperative for me as he was this day. I'm sure Gabriele was a big part of that. I love these guys so much and what you see in these images truly reflects who they are as individuals and a couple.

We went to some of our favorite locations that we do for our high school seniors. It was a long but enjoyable session that extended into the evening giving us some beautiful sunset images, one of which is shown here.

Giving Back - Relay for Life

We just wanted to let everyone know that the “Relay for Life” is coming up in Camas Washington on May 30th, 2009 . As my wife Karin and I both lost parents to cancer we feel strongly about their cause. As a local business we felt it fitting that that we should donate an entire photo session including all the finished prints to one of the families.

We would encourage you also to contribute to this or find a local cause to support either with your time or monies. In hard economic times these causes need us more than ever.

As she did not have traditional high school grad pictures done some years back, she took this graduating opportunity to have photos taken. What a great idea! Casey attends Oregon City High School so we photographed him in Historic Oregon City.

Although Casey kept his outfits to a minimum, as most of our guys do, he did bring along some great props. One was a classic felt hat he purchased while in England and an Epiphone SG guitar. Casey’s girlfriend Katie also came along for moral support, and she also made a great prop too. I really like what we came away with from the entire session. The third image (black & white) was actually an exposure error mistake, but actually became one of my favorite images.

Katie attends Castle Rock High School and was referred to us by her cousin Alyssa who is also graduating this year. Katie brought a lot of outfits with her, which was great. I told her we would rather have more to choose from than not enough. My wife Karin, who takes the role of a personal stylist for all our seniors, did a great job selecting the right outfit for each location. Katie was an absolute pleasure to work with. Especially when we put her in some bright lighting situations that would have made anyone squint. She handled it like a pro and stuck it out. I hope she feels those efforts were rewarded.

Daniel & Rachel - Wedding 11/29/08

Rachel was married at Pearson Air Museum and looked just like she stepped right out of the 1940’s. She seemed to blend right into the history and aircraft housed there. I have admired airplanes since I was a boy, so having the opportunity to do a wedding here was quite fun. Some years ago we had the privilege to do senior photos for Rachel and her two (twin) brother’s. It was great to see them all again.

Generally most of my subjects require me to take a few dozen shots for them to loosen up and feel comfortable in front of the camera. Bryan was an exception and warmed up immediately to it. His clothing choices although minimal were very good ones. Everything from a teal shirt to a winter coat worked well to give us a great variety of looks. He is a senior at Prairie High this year.

Alanna will graduate next year from Portland’s Cleveland High School. She initially planned to have her senior photos taken over there but chose instead to have them done here in our Urban Vancouver location. Her photo session was on a typical cool, crisp November day here in the Northwest. It’s my favorite time of year to do photography, not just for clients but for my own personal work too. With the sun low on the horizon and a thin layer of fog hanging around we had some beautiful lighting for her portraits.

Jack arrived in his 1973 Mercury Montego GT which he is restoring and has already won at least one award with. It was pouring rain at the time, but we all decided to give it a go anyway. By the time we got to our first location the rain had stopped and we were rewarded with some amazing lighting. Sometimes the risk pays off.

As we arrived at our first location with Alyssa there was a light sprinkle and then as the photo session progressed, so did the rain. So when life gives you rain, use an umbrella (plus it makes a great prop). Alyssa seemed very comfortable in front of the camera. Although she is not a professional model, I think the images we captured of her sure make her look like one. I hope she agrees. She attends Battleground HS.

We have known Brandon and his family for many years and have had the pleasure of photographing them throughout those years. She was an absolute joy to photograph and selected our Urban / Industrial Vancouver location for most of her photos. Her dad, a father of three girls, came along with us and helped to carry some of Emily's wardrobe changes. It was apparent that the two of them have a great relationship with each other. Below is one of my favorites we took of the two of them together.

Allie is a student at Ridgefield High School and selected The Academy as her favorite location for her senior pictures. She was a natural at posing, probably due to the fact that she's a fan of Americas Next Top Model. As they say “The camera loves her”.

Dustin attends Battleground High School and chose to have his senior pictures taken at one of our Urban Vancouver locations. He definitely has that rock star look about him. We shared a common interest in the Gibson SG guitar he brought with him and it's similar to one I once owned in my younger days.

Kathryn is a student of Mountain View High School in Vancouver, WA. She was on a very tight deadline with her yearbook photo due in just two days. We were able to processed and post all her images online within 24 hours from the last click of the shutter. She selected our Urban Vancouver location plus we gave her a bonus by taking a few shots of her at the Riverfront.

These images of Candace were taken at The Academy and Riverfront locations that we offer. The weather was in our favor at both places providing beautiful soft lighting. God helped out allowing the sun to peek out through the clouds at the river to add a nice warm glow to the sky.

Alex attends Columbia River High School here in Vancouver and she chose to have her senior photo session done at The Academy. Even though we have been here many times we are always finding new spots and angles to shoot from.

The first image in the series below is the last picture of this building ever taken. It was totally demolished only a few minutes later. So Alex, you have a one of a kind image that can not be reproduced ever again. Thanks for the opportunity to have us do your senior photos! You were a fun subject to work with.
